Forces and Flight - Practice Problems

Test your math and science skills on each of the three following problems. After working each problem, check your answer with the correct solution by rolling the mouse over the jet!

1. An airplane has a ground speed of 150 m/s when it encocunters a crosswind of 50 m/s. (a) What is the relative ground speed of the airplane? (b) If the plane had a final destination due North from where it started, what direction should the plane head in order to remain on course? (c) If the final destination is 2500 km from the orgin, how long will it take to make the trip?

2. The new B-2 stealth bomber can be considered a flying wing, in that it does not have disticnt wings. (See diagram below) If we treat the entire plane as a wing, use the following information to calculate the coeffieient of lift for the plane. The wing span is 52 meters, it has a mass of 181437 kg when fully loaded, a length of 21 m, and a max velocity of 1103 km/hr.

3. The Sweden JAS-39 fighter jet has a mass of 12474-kg when fully loaded, a wing span of 8.5-m (for each wing), and is capable of attaining a speed of 612 m/s. If we assume the coefficient of lift to be .75, the density of air to be 1.29-kg-m3, and the fighter to be in level flight, how fast is the jet flying?
