Abstract In textbook format, a popular but detailed history of aviation from the invention of the hot air balloon in 1783 to the present. One chapter is devoted to the Wright brothers, their patents, and their flyers. Includes study questions, a bibliography, and a timeline for each chapter, numerous photographs and drawings, and an extensive index. The first Wright patent for a flying machine, basically a description of their 1902 biplane glider, applied for and rejected in 1903 but then finally awarded in 1906, is reproduced in full in an appendix.
