| Abstract |
Comprehensive source in a single collection, of the published writings of Wilbur and Orville Wright--their journal articles, transcriptions of speeches, letters to the editor, transcriptions of testimony to congressional committees, and interviews--totalling 69 documents. The book is organized into 4 parts, each with an introductory text by the editors: Part 1 deals with invention of the airplane and the controversy with the Smithsonian Institution; Part 2 explores the technical problems of aeronautics; Part 3 presents the Wright brothers' views on their fellow experimenters; and Part 4 deals with their views on aviation issues of the day subsequently solicited by others. An appendix of five additional articles is also included: a 1927 interview with John T. Daniels, a member of the lifesaving crew who witnessed the first flight in 1903; a 1928 and a 1943 article by William J. Tate who first welcomed the Wright brothers to Kitty Hawk and became a lifelong friend; a 1948 article by Charels E. Taylor, an employee of the Wright brothers at their bicycle shop who built the engine for their first flyer; and a 1954 article by Mabel Beck, private secretary first to Wilbur Wright from 1910 and then to Orville Wright until his death in 1948. Includes 60 photograhs, numerous explanatory and reference footnotes by the editors, and an extensive index. Unpublished documents and depositions by the Wright brothers in their patent suits are not included. |
