Abstract Describes the trials and failure of aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and his pilot Charles Manly. The author also presents the stage of work the Wright brothers attained at this point, reporting on their intuitive genius, their efforts with a wind tunnel and wing warping, numerous tests, and their ultimate achievement of the first successful powered flight. This first-flight claim by the Wright brothers was contested by the Smithsonian Institution and remained unresolved until 1942.
