The Boeing-developed inertial upper stage (IUS), an unpiloted, upper-stage booster rocket, was carried into low-Earth-orbit by either the Space Shuttle or by a rocket and then launched. The IUS then placed satellites in higher Earth orbit and sent space probes to other planets.
