A,rospatiale produced the Gazelle as a replacement for the Alouette helicopter in the early 1970s. It was designed to meet a French Army requirement for an observation helicopter. The Gazelle incorporated the Fenestron (an enclosed tail rotor) and the rigid main rotor of the German MBB Bo 105.
