The engine for the reproduction is an original, and one used by Coffynhimself. It is a standard Wright Vertical Four engine, serial number 20.This type of engine was designed in 1906 by Orville as a replacement for theWrights' horizontal engine designs of 1903-1905. It produced 35 horsepower, and was known for its reliability. Coffyn modified the flywheel of theengine, cutting gear teeth into it so he could use a crank to start it fromthe front of the airplane, rather than pulling the props through at therear.
